SOTAX launches Mechanical Tablet for verification of hardness tester functionality
The universal MT, a mechanical tablet for routine checks of tablet hardness tester functionality.
The universal MT inserted in load cell of hardness tester.

March 2013: Measuring product breaking force is a standard procedure in every tablet manufacturing facility. Like all instrumentation, regular qualification of a hardness tester is mandatory. In order to ensure that the instrument is functioning within specifications, SOTAX has developed the MT, a simple device that is designed for frequent routine verifications of the functionality of tablet hardness testers between qualifications.

Supplier-independent, the MT is designed to work with all hardness testers. The tablets are engineered so that a predetermined amount of force triggers a mechanical breaking point which is recorded by the hardness tester.

MTs are manufactured at five different breaking forces with an accuracy of ±0.5 Kp or better (5 Kp, 10 Kp, 15 Kp, 20 Kp, 30 Kp). They can also verify six different physical dimensions ± 0.03 mm (5 mm, 10 mm, 14 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 30 mm).
The devices are all calibrated, verified, and tested according to a strict quality process using a NIST traceable calibration instrument. A full internal test report along with a calibration certificate is provided with each MT.

SOTAX announces the introduction of the Soft Gelatin Capsule Flow Cell

August 2011:  The SOTAX Group, the market leader and pioneer in USP Apparatus 4 Flow announce the introduction of the lipidic cell for soft gelatin capsule testing into the latest release of USP <2040> Disintegration and Dissolution of Dietary Supplements. This flow cell was first introduced in Eur. Ph. chapter 2.9.42 and has been official since 2006.

Designed specifically for use with lipidic products such as fat-based suppositories and oil-filled soft gelatin capsules, this flow cell solves the problem of floating and the formation of a lipidic layer on the surface of the dissolution medium seen in USP Apparatus 2 methods. The cell consists of three compartments. The lower part (1) is made up of two adjacent chambers connected to an overflow device. The dissolution medium passes through chamber A and is subjected to an upward flow. The flow in chamber B is directed downward to an exit that then leads upward to a filtering assembly. The middle part (2) of the cell has a cavity designed to collect lipophilic excipients that float on the dissolution medium. A metal mesh is used as a rough filter. The upper part (3) holds the filter in place. The sample is then collected and analyzed for drug release content.

SOTAX introduces the USP Apparatus 4 Dialysis Adapter

August 2011:  The SOTAX Group, the market leader and pioneer in USP Apparatus 4 announce the release of a new Dialysis Adapter for use with the SOTAX CE7smart Flow Through Dissolution System.

The patented A4D was designed and tested in collaboration with Professor Diane Burgess of the School of Pharmacy at The University of Connecticut. The adapter was designed to fulfill a growing application requirement for drug release testing from controlled-release parenteral products such as liposomes and nanoparticle formulations (1). Dr. Burgess’s work on in-vitro drug release testing using USP Apparatus 4 began several years ago with the study of microsphere formulations (2).

The challenges with monitoring drug release from these formulations are sample containment, filtration, and method standardization. Traditional small scale drug release testing on liposomes began with non-compendial sample and separate, dialysis sac, and diffusion cell techniques. In order to incorporate this into the USP 4 method, an adapter was designed which uses dialysis tubing fit over a compartment within the standard 22.6 mm flow cell. This new adapter allows researchers to accurately discriminate different liposome formulations and defines a standardized approach to dialysis testing. SOTAX is a proud sponsor of The School of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut. In late 2009, the University of Connecticut honored SOTAX with the dedication of the “SOTAX Dissolution and Drug Release Testing Laboratory” at UCONN.

SOTAX India, as a part of their commitment to promote continuous training to the pharma industry professionals and pharmacy students invited Samir Haddouchi, CEO - SPS Pharma Services, France to Mumbai to give lecture on Advance Dissolution Method using USP apparatus IV at Pharmalytica 2011 event at Hotel Westin, Mumbai on July 27.

He was also invited by Bombay College of Pharmacy and made presentation on Flow through dissolution method using USP Apparatus IV.

According to Dr.Ramaswamy, the double digit growth by the Indian Pharma Industry and the current economic development , trained Manpower in India is attracting many multinational pharma companies towards India.

The cost of production in the West and European markets are increasing and hence their profit margins are coming down. However in India the cost of production is lesser than in Europe. As of now we have more than 160 drug manufacturing facilities approved by US, FDA and this makes India as the second largest country which has the US FDA approved plants in the world after US, he said.

Outsourcing R & D work, manufacturing, clinical trials etc from India by MNC’s is the order of the day. They demand high quality production and international standard precision in the work. This calls for high degree of automation and precise testing of quality.

“I see a good opportunity for SOTAX India to place our Semi and Fully Automatic Systems in the field of Tablet Testing with R & D, Manufacturing Plants, CRO’s etc. It is the right time SOTAX has entered India and establishing their own subsidiary in Mumbai”, he concluded.
